As there is no permanent hospital or health centre in Somsar village, it is our prime concern to extend healthcare services in Somsar Village.

The population of Somsar village itself is around 5,000 and that put togather with five other adjoining villages is 15,000. Health sevices available for this' large number of people is only through a Subsidiary Health Centre, situated at Khandaghosh about 8 KMs away, which is far from sufficient.

Therefore, the Seva Mandir has introduced healthcare services in Somsar village through Vivekananda Swasthya Seva Sangha, Kolkata. Every fortnight, Doctors and Healthcare Volunteers from Kolkata, equipped with medicines reach the village for medical treatment. The doctors stay at the village the entire day and prescribe medicines after check-up.

Medicines are provided free. On the third week of every month, Specialist Doctors in the fields of Dental, Eye and Gynaecology visit Somsar village and treat the villagers free of cost. Sanitation and Vaccination programmes are also taken up. Not only villagers of Somsar, but those staying in villages around are immensely benefited by the services provided by Vivekananda Swasthya Seva Sangha.

In addition, medical camps are organized from time to time which not only cater to the villagers at Somsar but also those coming from areas far off.

Already this programme of Medical and Health services has been able to earn the villagers' trust. Meanwhile various health schemes of Vivekananda Swasthya Seva Sangha like 'Comprehensive Village Development' and others are already being implemented.

 A Rural Ambulance

This is yielding remarkable results at the village level. One of the remarkable achievements is the educated, willing voluntreers, selected at the village are being given professional training as 'Community Health Guides'. Trained youth visit every village home and enquire about healthcare, thus bringing forth improvement in hygiene awareness of the village.

They prepare themselves to take up the Sangha's preventive programmes. Audio-visual Shows and Slide Shows are organized from time to time which have helped to increase health awareness amongst the villagers.

The Mobile Healthcare Unit The mobile medical van of the Vivekananda Swasthya Seva Sangha moves around in the villages once in every three months. It camps there with its medical team and equipments for three days at a time to be totally engaged for the service of the ailing villagers.

The medical van is equipped with a portable X-ray machine, Opthalmological equipments, medium sized generators, slide-projector and pathological test equipments.

During 2006-2007, a total number of 4,540 patients were treated.

In the meanwhile owing to earnest desire of villagers of the Somsar area Homeopathic treatment through a separate section has been started from January 2007, with 2 experienced doctors and 2 volunteers. Total 272 patients were treated upto March 2007.
